Your First Visit

What to Expect During Your First Visit

At your initial appointment, we take the time to perform a thorough consultation to understand your concerns and assess your dental health. This visit typically includes:

  • CBCT scan (high-resolution, 3D view of you tooth) and digital radiographs

  • Pulp Vitality Testing of the tooth in question to determine the extent of the issue

  • A clear and personalized treatment plan, including a diagnosis based on your exam and imaging results

Sometimes treatment may begin the same day, if your dental insurance permits to proceed.

Beginning Treatment: First Phase of Root Canal

If root canal therapy was initiated during your visit, please understand that today’s procedure marks the first phase of treatment. Additional appointments are necessary to complete the process and fully restore your tooth.

Temporary Filling Care

A temporary filling has been placed to seal the tooth until treatment is completed. It’s important to protect this area to avoid complications:

  • Avoid sticky, hard, chewy, or crunchy foods on the treated side

  • Expect the surface to feel slightly rough or uneven — this is normal

  • If the filling comes out please, contact our office for guidance

Medications and Numbness

To support your recovery and manage any discomfort, please follow these medication and safety guidelines closely:

  • Begin any prescribed medication exactly as directed

  • Do not eat or drink hot beverages until the numbness from local anesthesia has completely worn off, to avoid accidental injury to your lips, tongue, or cheeks

Discomfort After Treatment

It is completely normal to experience mild tenderness or soreness in the treated area following your root canal procedure. This discomfort is often a result of inflammation in the surrounding tissues, particularly if you were experiencing pain or infection prior to treatment. You may notice sensitivity when chewing, touching the area, or even mild aching in the jaw.

This discomfort typically begins to subside within a few days, and most patients feel significantly better within 3 to 7 days. However, in some cases, minor soreness may persist a bit longer as your body continues to heal.

Important Reminders

  • Do not chew on the treated tooth until the root canal is fully completed.
  • Do not visit your general dentist for final restoration (such as a crown) until the endodontic treatment is finished.

Return for your scheduled follow-up visit to complete the procedure.

Please Contact Us If You Experience:

  • Visible swelling inside or outside your mouth
  • Allergic reaction to medication (rash, hives, etc.)
  • Severe or worsening pain lasting more than three days
  • A need to cancel or reschedule your next appointment

  • What is endodontic treatment and when is it needed?

Endodontic treatment focuses on the inside of the tooth, including the pulp and root canals. It is commonly needed when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected due to deep decay, cracks, trauma, or repeated dental procedures. Treating the tooth at this stage helps relieve discomfort and preserve the natural tooth structure.

  • Is a root canal painful?

Modern root canal treatment is designed to be comfortable and efficient. With current techniques and anesthesia, most patients report that the procedure feels similar to receiving a standard filling. The goal of treatment is to eliminate pain caused by infection, not to create it.

  • How long does a treated tooth last?

A tooth that has received proper endodontic treatment and is restored appropriately can last many years. Long term success depends on factors such as oral hygiene, regular dental visits, and completing any recommended restorative work after treatment.

  • Do I need a referral to see an endodontic specialist?

In many cases, patients are referred by their general dentist, but referrals are not always required. If you are experiencing tooth pain or have been advised that you may need specialized care, you can contact the practice directly to discuss your situation and next steps.
